Sermon 3-22-2020

Sermon for the people and friends of Immanuel Church – Walworth

"New Sight” – Please read: John 9: 1-41

I READ A STORY THE OTHER DAY, ABOUT TWO BLIND MEN WHO HAD BOTH BEEN HEALED OF THEIR BLINDNESS BY JESUS. THEY WERE EXCITED TO MEET SOMEONE WHO HAD ALSO BEEN HEALED. THEY TALKED ABOUT THE WONDER OF BEING ABLE TO SEE; THE COLORS OF FLOWERS, THE GLORY OF SUNRISES, THE FACES OF CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN. THEY TALKED ABOUT THE POWER OF SEEING THE FACE OF JESUS. THEY WERE LAUGHING AND HAVING A GREAT TIME TOGETHER, UNTIL ONE OF THEM SAID, “DO YOU RECALL HOW JESUS TOOK SOME OF HIS SPIT, MADE MUD, AND PUT IT ON YOUR EYES AND YOU COULD SEE?” THE OTHER MAN LOOKED STUNNED AND ANSWERED, “WHY NO. JESUS SIMPLY SAID, “RECEIVE YOU SIGHT.” AND I COULD SEE.”

THE FIRST MAN SAID, “WAIT A MINUTE. YOU MEAN HE DIDN’T USE MUD?”

    “NO.”

THE OTHER SAID, “WELL, DIDN’T HE AT LEAST HAVE YOU WASH YOUR EYES IN THE POOL OF SILOAM?”

“NO, OF COURSE NOT. WHOEVER HEARD OF ANYTHING SO RIDICULOUS AS MUD IN YOUR EYE. I THINK YOU STILL HAVE MUD IN YOUR EYES. YOU’RE STILL BLIND!”

THE CONVERSATION DETERIORATED FROM THERE. RIGHT THEN AND THERE, THEY FORMED THE FIRST TWO DENOMINATIONS: THE ‘MUDITES’ AND THE ‘ANTI-MUDITES’. WHO’S BLIND NOW?

THE STORY IN JOHN’S GOSPEL IS LONG AND DETAILED. WHAT STANDS OUT FOR ME WAS THE DISCUSSION ABOUT BLINDNESS; IT’S CAUSES, IT’S CURES, AND WHO IS STILL BLIND. JESUS AND HIS DISCIPLES SEE THE MAN, BLIND SINCE BIRTH AND THE DISCIPLES WANT TO KNOW WHO IS TO BLAME FOR HIS BLINDNESS. NOTICE THE QUESTION THEY’RE ASKING: WAS THIS HIS FAULT OR THE FAULT OF HIS PARENTS? DID THIS MAN COMMIT SOME SIN , WHILE STILL INSIDE HIS MOTHER’S WOMB THAT CAUSED HIS BLINDNESS? WHAT A QUESTION!

THE DISCIPLES ASKING THIS QUESTION IS THE START OF A MULTI-PART STORY. JESUS TELLS HIS LISTENERS THAT NEITHER THE MAN NORHIS PARENTS CAUSED HIS BLINDNESS, THUS THEIR ENTIRE LINE OF QUESTIONS WAS WRONG. JESUS COULD HAVE TOLD THEM: “IT’S NO ONE’S FAULT. BLINDNESS IS NOT A PUNISHMENT FOR BAD BEHAVIOR.”
